Portland Nordic Seeks Bill Koch League Program Coordinator

Portland Nordic is a nonprofit §501(c)(3) organization that promotes healthy and active lifestyles in greater Portland, Maine through the sport of Nordic skiing. We run the majority of our programming, including the Bill Koch League (BKL) and a Middle School Program, at the Riverside Golf Course where we assist the City of Portland with grooming and trail maintenance. BKL is a regional youth ski program named after Bill Koch, the first U.S. Olympic medalist in cross-country skiing.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Our BKL program, for youth in grades K-8, places an emphasis on fostering a love for the sport. Participants in our learn-to-ski program, which meets Saturday mornings from 9-11, will develop skills such as coordination, agility, and balance taught through a variety of games and activities. Above all else, we strive to create a fun, low-key environment, but there may be a few racing opportunities for those interested in experiencing competition.

POSITION: Portland Nordic is looking for an organized and energetic Bill Koch League Program Coordinator. This is a stipended position at $1,500 for the season.

RESPONSIBILITIES: We rely on our generous and enthusiastic volunteer base to help ensure that our programs run smoothly. Participants are broken up into age groups, all of which must be accompanied by adult volunteers. We rely on volunteers to help manage gear, as well as ensure a smooth check-in/check-out process at each session.

The BKL Program Coordinator will provide communications and guidance to our volunteers in advance of the season, as well as before each Saturday morning session. On-snow volunteer coaches will need assistance developing practice plans for any given group. There are a number of other volunteer opportunities throughout the season, including check-in/check-out, gear management, and special event support, so the Program Coordinator may delegate tasks as needed. The Program Coordinator will also maintain participant records and communicate with parents and guardians on a weekly basis. This may include communicating with parents and families around COVID protocols.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Passion for Nordic skiing - Basic knowledge is preferred, but if you are eager and willing to learn, we’ll help you!

  • Experience with volunteer coordination/management preferred

  • Excellent planning, organizational, and communication skills (both written and verbal) are critical

  • Consistent availability on Saturday mornings during the season is a must

  • Must be able to adapt on short notice, as programs must be adjusted for inclement weather and unforeseen circumstances

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Opportunity to coach at annual BKL festival

This position is expected to run approximately November 1, 2021 – March 15, 2022, with some flexibility on start and end dates. This is an excellent opportunity to build relationships within the Nordic skiing community of Greater Portland.

COMPENSATION: The Bill Koch League Program Coordinator will receive a stipend of $1,500.

TO APPLY: If interested, please send a cover letter and resume to Portland Nordic Board Member Olivia Orr (olivia@portlandnordic.org) by October 15, 2021.
